Air to Water Heat Pump

These types of heat pump extract heat from the external air and can operate to temperatures of -25°C and +35°C. Average annual air temperature in Ireland is approximately 8°C and this will allow for the Air Source heat pump to meet a Coefficient of Performance of 3.3 which means that for every 1kWh of electricity used to power the heat pump compressor, between 3-4kWh of heating energy are produced. (At Air temperature 7°C and Water temperature 35°C)

Split (inverter Driven) Heat Pumps

The inverter technology allows for variable speed compressors have the facility to reduce or increase their heat output as the heat demand changes in the dwelling and with different air temperatures. This ensures that the optimal annual heating factor is achieved.

These heat pumps can produce a comfortable indoor heat quality with very low CO2 emissions.

Benefits of the Air to Water Heat Pump

-          Low cost installation as there is minimal ground works

-          Easy to install for Retro fit dwellings

-          Can work in conjunction with an existing Oil / Gas BoilerGeothermal heat pump & Cylinder

-          Can be supplied in Single or Three Phase

-          Can be used with Underfloor Heating, Low Temperature Radiators or Conventional Radiators.

-          Installed Externally

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal heat pumps use energy that is stored in the ground and is free to use.

The geothermal heat pump can be installed in the utility room or in the Garage (depending on the brand of heat pump). The ground source heat pump has a Coefficient of Performance of 4 which means that for every 1kWh of electricity used to power the heat pump compressor, between 4kWh of heating energy are produced.

The geothermal heat pump requires the source of energy to be tapped and this can either be done via a ground loop collector or vertical bore hole. The size of the ground loop or the depth of the bore hole is dependent on the size of the heat pump and the ground conditions to where it is installed.

Depending on the brand of the Geothermal heat pump, it can be very compact, fitting into a space in the utility with a built in Domestic Hot Water Cylinder with overall dimensions of 600 (w) x 600 (d) x 1800 (h)

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating is a low temperature distributor, typically with a temperature of around 45°C unlike radiators which can operate typically at 70°C. It works very well in conjunction with any form of heating source such as Heat pumps, Oil / Gas Boilers, wood pellet boiler for example. The amount of pipe that is installed is dependent on the source of the heating and also in relation to the glazing areas in the rooms to which it is installed. The heat from underfloor heating is radiant heat which can be stored in the thermal mass of the floor which allows for the heat to be released throughout the day.

MD Energy Ltd offers a full design service on all underfloor heating and can provide line drawings at the construction stage of the development.

Ventilation Systems

An option of meeting the ventilation requirements when building an air tight house is to install a Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery system. This allows for the warm air to be extracted from your wet rooms which passes through a heat exchanger and heats the incoming fresh air that is been supplied to your habitable rooms. It provides a healthy fresh air and is helpful to allergy suffers as the air is filtered; it also reduces the overall heating of your dwelling.
